DON’T BE CENSORIOUS (vv.1-2)

1. THE ORDER (v.1)

What is Jesus NOT saying?

What IS Jesus saying?

The judgmental person by not being forgiving and loving testifies to his own arrogance and impenitence, by which he shuts himself out from God’s forgiveness” (Carson).

DON’T BE HYPOCRITICAL (vv.3-5)

DON’T USE OTHER PEOPLES’ SINS TO COVER UP YOUR OWN.

Jesus does not say it is wrong to help your brother remove a speck of dust in his eye, but it is wrong for a person with a ‘plank’ in his eye to offer help” (Carson)

In all our attitudes and behaviour towards others we are to play neither the judge nor the hypocrite, but the brother, caring for others so much that we first blame and correct ourselves and then seek to be constructive in the help we give” (Stott).

DON’T BE UNDISCERNING (v.6)

The example of Jesus – Matthew 10:14; 15:13-14.

The example of the apostles – Acts 13:44=46; 18:5-6; 28:23-31.

See 2 Peter 2:1, 22.
